1 Editor’s note: Major General Oliver O. Howard actually was a West Pointer and career soldier. He was, however, deeply religious. He helped to found a Congregationalist church in Washington, D. C; Howard University (Negro) in Washington, which was named after him, and Lincoln Memorial College at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, for “poor whites.” He lost an arm at the battle of Fair Oaks or Seven Pines, Virginia, in 1862, but continued in the army long afterward.

2 Editor’s note: Sherman’s total force at peak is given in the authoritative Battles and Leaders of the Civil War, Volume IV, as 112,819 men, with Johnston’s estimated as high as 71,000. Each side suffered casualties of between 30,000 and 40,000, accurate indication of the extreme severity of the fighting in the Atlanta Campaign.

3 Editor’s note: One amazing aspect of Strong’s combat experiences was the manner in which groups of Federal infantrymen, sometimes of platoon or company strength, would join together informally to wage war without any officers or direction from above. Essentially, it represented a singular manifestation of the American spirit of private enterprise in a war. Here it resulted in the unscheduled capture of a town.

4 Editor’s note: “Rally ‘Round the Flag” was, of course, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” “We’ll Hang Jeff Davis on a Sour Apple Tree” was the identical tune, originally a Southern camp meeting song to which Southerners set the words, “We’ll Hang John Brown on a Sour Apple Tree” in 1859-60. The song about “Old Brother Wise” was a comic tune making fun of the wartime Governor of Virginia.
